The Burchfield Penney Art Center

The Burchfield Penney was founded in 1966 on the campus of Buffalo State College to honor the legacy of Charles E. Burchfield and the artists of Western New York State. In November 2008, the museum’s first free-standing building opened to the public. The 84,000 square foot museum, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects of New York City is the first “green” art museum in New York State having earned silver LEED status from the U.S. Green Building Council in February 2009. In January 2009, the travel editors of The New York Times named Buffalo, New York and the Burchfield Penney Art Center the #37 of 44 Places to Go in 2009.

Our Impact

The Burchfield Penney commits to inspire, invest in, and celebrate the historical and contemporary accomplishments of artists. We will energize the community and Buffalo State College through meaningful, educational, and engaging experiences and will sustain and enhance our culture and environment through our decisions and actions.
